The subject of Errol Morris’s documentary Gates of Heaven is a cemetery where people lay their pets to rest. Before Morris made the film, filmmaker Werner Herzog had promised to eat his shoe if Morris made the film. Herzog did just that, live, onstage, at the UC Berkeley Theater, where Morris’s film premiered in 1979. Then our own Les Blank made a film about THAT. Everyone in the Tenenbaum family is a genius. Etheline (Anjelica Huston), the anthropologist mother of them all, seems to be the repository of the family’s normalcy. As children, her offspring are a Math and Business whiz Investor (Ben Stiller), a prize-winning playwright (Gwyneth Paltrow) and a Juniors tennis champion (Luke Wilson). But as adults, the children just cannot seem to cope. Royal Tenenbaum. the divorced and disgraced father (Gene Hackman), is an intermittently lovable scoundrel. Expect the unexpected. Leon Theremin invents the first electronic synthesizer, the “theremin,” which produces eery, other-worldly sounds. First, Thirties horror film sound technicians insert theremin sounds into their soundtracks to suggest spookiness. Then, in 1938, Leon Theremin disappears, and his weird story gets weirder.

A solar-powered robot named WALL-E is alone on the Earth, which had been abandoned 700 years earlier. Collecting and compacting all that’s been left on Earth—that is, TRASH. A Japanese bureaucrat nearing retirement lives a joyless life. When he receives a terminal cancer diagnosis, he’s moved to look for meaning in his life. Akira Kurosawa directed and co-wrote, “Ikuru,” which was inspired partly by Tolstoy’s “The Death of Ivan Ilyich.” In Japanese with English subtitles. Considered a masterpiece by top critics.

“Hero” is set in the 3rd century BC at a time when the King of Qin is trying to unite seven kingdoms, leading the other kingdoms to send assassins to kill him. A warrior called Nameless (Jet Li) arrives at Qin’s home, saying he has killed the assassins. He presents their swords to the king and tells the story of how he killed them. Beautifully staged battle scenes make subtitles almost unnecessary. Directed and co-written by Zhang Yimou. In Chinese with English subtitles.

Korean brothers own their late father’s shoe store south of LA. Tensions exist in their mixed Asian and Black neighborhood, but the brothers develop a tight friendship with Kamilla, an 11 year old African American girl. The action takes place on the day the Rodney King verdict comes down, stoking fear and causing chaos all over LA. Written and directed by Justin Chon.

A Korean American family moves from LA to a small Arkansas town, hoping to make a living as farmers. Bad weather and high prices plague them, and the wife is not enthusiastic about the farm until her foul-mouthed but supportive mother moves in with them. In Korean and English with English subtitles.

The basic facts are these: Evelyn Quan Wang (Michelle Yeoh) is a Chinese immigrant who owns a laundromat with her goofy husband, Waymond (Key Huy Kwan). While dealing with an IRS audit of the laundromat, Evelyn learns the IRS is manipulating alternate universes. After that, you’ll find the cinematic floor moving under your feet.  "Everything" won for 7 of its 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh).
