Berkeley, July 23, 2014— On Hiroshima Peace Day, people from around the world stop to remember the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and do what they can to stop it from happening again. Since 1995, the Berkeley Public Library has celebrated Peace Day with a reading of Eleanor Coerr’s Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. This year’s program will take place in the Children’s department on the fourth floor of the Central Library located at 2090 Kittredge (at Shattuck) on Tuesday, August 5, from 4:00-6:30 p.m.

Berkeley, July 25, 2014—On Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 6 pm-8 pm, the Central Library and the Claremont Branch Library will join other neighborhood and civic groups in marking National Night Out, an annual event designed to build community spirit and encourage a greater sense of neighborhood awareness. The Claremont Branch at 2940 Benvenue Avenue will have bubbles, sidewalk chalk and other family-friendly activities out for folks who come by to say “hello.” The Central Library will host children’s crafts and a surprise for adults outside the Library entrance at 2090 Kittredge Avenue. Library staff will be on hand to tell you all about services offered by the Berkeley Public Library! Members of the Berkeley Police and Fire Department will drop by to visit, too.

Berkeley, July 11, 2014—The Berkeley Public Library is now offering online reservations for its free community meeting rooms. [spaces] is our new reservations software that makes reserving our community meeting rooms more convenient. [spaces] allows users to locate available meeting rooms and submit a request to use them online. Upon submission, users receive immediate email notification that the request was received followed by an email confirming or declining the request within a few days.

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class sustainable building strategies and practices.

All are invited to meet Najarian and discuss his work during an Artist Reception on Sunday, July 13th at 2:00 p.m. in the 1st floor Catalog Lobby of the Central Library.

Berkeley, June 10, 2014 —“Summer Slide” is a decline in kids’ reading ability over the summer and is a factor in the academic achievement gap. Studies show that kids who read during the summer beat this “slide” and may actually see their reading skills improve. The Berkeley Public Library’s Summer Reading Game, Paws to Read, combines books, library events, and prizes to encourage young people ages 0 to 13 to read this summer. The game, which runs from June 13 to August 16, 2014, asks young people to choose whether to keep track of the number of books or pages read, or time spent reading.Call 510-981-6223 for more information.

Join our team as a volunteer adult literacy tutor with Berkeley Public Library’s Berkeley READS. Berkeley READS is our adult and family literacy program. Berkeley, June 9, 2014—Berkeley Public Library welcomes local pianist and composer William Beatty for a concert/demonstration of The Chopin/Jazz Connection on Thursday, June 19 at 12:00 pm at the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge (at Shattuck) in the 5th floor Art & Music Department. To learn more about this event call 510-981-6236 Beatty will perform Chopin etudes, and discuss and demonstrate how Chopin’s unique composition style relates to and influences jazz.
