Max Frisch and The Arsonists:
Aurora Theatre Company discussion at Berkeley Public Library

The Berkeley Public Library welcomes back Aurora Theatre Company for “Max Frisch and Remembering to Be A Citizen”, on Monday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge at Shattuck, in the 3rd floor Community Meeting Room.

Join Michael Mansfield (Education Director, Aurora Theatre Company and Faculty Lecturer, UC Berkeley, Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies) for an interactive discussion celebrating Swiss playwright Max Frisch and his 1958 classic The Arsonists. Timeless topics of politics, silence, evil, class warfare, and the inability to act invite us to adjust our moral compass and conscience, whether it’s 1948 during the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, 1953 in a radio-play called Mr. Biedermann and the Arsonists, 1958 in a play called The Arsonists, or 2013 as we reflect on our world and our lives today. An evening to celebrate words, this free program is presented in conjunction with Aurora Theatre Company’s freshly mounted production of Bay Area Writer-Director Mark Jackson’s The Arsonists in a rousing translation by Alistair Beaton.

For more information about The Arsonists at Aurora Theatre Company, visit the website: www.auroratheatre.org.

This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library (www.berkeleylibraryfriends.org). For more information, call 510-981-6139 or visit www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org.

The Amazing Literary Adventures of Chabon & Waldman

Berkeley Public Library invites you to an exhibit on the literary careers of this year’s Berkeley Public Library Foundation’s Authors Dinner co-chairs, husband and wife authors, Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman. They are the authors of a dozen books each, ranging from fiction and mysteries to books on parenthood. Chabon won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in fiction for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. His latest novel is Telegraph Avenue, set in the East Bay. Like his wife, Chabon has written essays on parenthood, collected in his book, Manhood for Amateurs. Waldman has written seven books in her popular series, The Mommy-Track Mysteries. Her controversial essay “Motherlove” was published in 2005 and was argued about on The View. Oprah Winfrey invited Waldman onto her show to discuss the essay. The reception of the essay inspired Waldman to publish a collection of essays, Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace.

Berkeley’s Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street, historic lobby and old entrance display cases. The exhibit runs January 8 – February 10, 2013.

SF Shakespeare presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”
at Central Library

Berkeley Public Library welcomes the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival as they present the touring company’s presentation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Saturday, January 26, 2013, 2 p. m. at the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge (at Shattuck). The free performance will take place in the library’s third floor Community Meeting Room.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is perhaps the most popular of Shakespeare’s comedies.  With impetuous lovers, quarreling fairies and the sheer slapstick energy of the Mechanicals’ play within a play, there’s something for everyone.  The 55 minute touring production presents a cast of professional actors in costume, with set, props, and recorded music.  After the play, the cast will meet with the audience for a question and answer session.

Berkeley Public Library to host
American Civil War
lecture and community book reading
to mark the 150th anniversary of America’s most divisive conflict,
Saturday, September 15th, at 1:00 p.m.
in the Central Library’s third floor Community Meeting Room.

Berkeley, California – The Berkeley Public Library will host “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War”, a reading and discussion program sponsored by the American Library Association, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Cal Humanities, and the California History- Social Project. The Library is one of 4 public libraries across the state to host the series which is intended to foster contemplation and conversation of the legacy of the Civil War and emancipation.

The event will begin with a lecture given by Professor Ari Kelman, Associate Professor of History at UC Davis. It will be followed by three simultaneous community book discussions of the following works: March by Geraldine Brooks, Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam by James McPherson, America’s War: Talking About the  Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversaries, an anthology edited by Edward L. Ayers.

“The Civil War takes us back to a time in American history when civility ruptured and the nation split in two,” said Jim Leach, chairman of NEH.  “The sesquicentennial of the Civil War and emancipation is an occasion for America to reflect together about the causes and ramifications of our greatest internal conflict, and a most appropriate way for ‘us the living’ to renew the American spirit in these still-troubled times.”

Multiple copies of each of the three books for the group discussions were awarded to the Berkeley Public Library and are available for check out with a Berkeley Library card. Members of the public planning to attend the community book discussion portion of the event are encouraged to read at least one of the works prior to the discussion sessions.
