PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
Red, Bike and Green: An Art + Photo Exhibition

The Oakland bicycle collective, Red, Bike and Green (RBG) exhibits photographs and original artwork in Berkeley Public Library’s Central Catalog Lobby, 2090 Kittredge at Shattuck, downtown Berkeley, from January 9th through March 11th .

RBG: An Art + Photo Exhibition presents the work of nine artists – Africano Photographia, Corinna Nicole Brewer, Ed Nitri, Che Holt, Kwesi InLight, Makeda Rashidi, Gloria “Smokie” Arce, Nick James and Juliana “Jewels” Smith – all unified in their close attention to Black health, economic empowerment and sustainability in Bay Area communities and abroad. The works are in a variety of media – photography, painting, and graphic design – each affirming RBG’s Three Point Plan of Health, Economics, and Environment.  Much like the community rides RBG organizes; the exhibition depicts cycling as intergenerational and recreational, asserting the value of Black healthy living.  Access to the exhibit is available during the library’s open hours: Monday 12 – 8; Tuesday 10- 8; Wednesday – Saturday, 10 – 6; Sunday 1 – 5.

In conjunction with this exhibition the library presents a FREE family program which will include hands on crafts and a presentation by RBG founders and exhibiting artists on Saturday afternoon, February 25th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm in the Community Meeting Room on the 3rd floor of the Central Library.  The Children’s Department of the Berkeley Public Library hosts the family craft workshop where participants can create spoke cards and decorate their bike helmets. Supplies will be provided. Please call the Art & Music Department at (510) 981-6241 for more information. See also RBG’s website (www.redbikeandgreen.org) for upcoming family rides and related events.

Founded in the fall of 2007 by Jenna Burton, Red, Bike and Green started as a small group of Black urban cyclists in Oakland, CA.  After notifying a few friends of her dream to create a Black cyclists group, Jenna Burton soon drafted the Three Point Plan; giving this cycling group a deep social purpose.  RBG has been recently featured on the National Radio Project’s program Making Contact and in Momentum magazine.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT & ARTIST WORKSHOP
Man vs. Nature:
quiet images from the frontline

Oakland photographer and life coach, Nancy Duranteau exhibits color prints from her series Man vs. Nature in Berkeley Public Library’s Central Catalog Lobby, 2090 Kittredge at Shattuck, downtown Berkeley, from November 6th through December 17th.

Duranteau explores the complex relationship of humans and their natural environment by focusing on the futile struggle to replace chaos with structure.  Her series of photographs depict functional objects created by man facing inevitable destruction at the hands of nature.  Exploring this process through photography provides an opportunity to embrace that which is natural within us and in the world around us, yet improperly labeled disorderly and undesirable by society.   Access to the exhibit is available during the library’s open hours: Monday 12 – 8; Tuesday 10- 8; Wednesday – Saturday, 10 – 6; Sunday 1 – 5.

In conjunction with this exhibition Nancy Duranteau will present a FREE workshop “Building your Dream Life out of Chaos” on Saturday afternoon, December 17th at 3:00 pm in the Community Meeting Room on the 3rd floor of the Central Library.  Duranteau will speak about her approach to life coaching and how you can use documentary photography to achieve your goals.  Please call the Art & Music Department at (510) 981-6241 to register for this workshop.

Duranteau explores documentary photography through the lens of life coaching.  Her unique approach to life coaching integrates photography as a medium to facilitate self-awareness and explore emotions.  Duranteau’s educational background includes undergraduate work at Boston University where she received a B.A. degree in Economics and graduate work in Organizational Psychology at Columbia University in New  York.  She’s completed formal coaching programs including certification from JFK  University and Personnel Decisions, International.  An exceptional coach with a wealth of experience, she’s been featured in Fitness Magazine for her work.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Book Into Film: The Last Station
Discussion Group at the Berkeley Public Library

Berkeley Public Library invites you to participate in an examination of The Last Station, a critically acclaimed film based on Jay Parini’s novel of the same name. The book and film are about the final years of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, in which he renounces his title, property, and family in favor of poverty and celibacy. Countess Sofya, his wife of nearly fifty years, discovers his plans to leave the rights to his iconic novels to the Russian people rather than his own family, and decides to use every trick of seduction in her considerable arsenal, to fight for what she believes is rightfully hers. Discussion group participants will read the book at home and then gather at 1:30 on Saturday, November 5, 2011 in the 3rd floor Community Meeting Room at Berkeley’s Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street to view the film together. After viewing the film, participants will discuss the book, the movie and the adaptation process.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, this free Book and Film program at the Central Library takes place every other month and offers adult and teen patrons the opportunity to discuss books, films and the art of adaptation. Participation is limited and registration is required. Please call (510) 981-6236 to register for one or more of these programs.

The Central Library is open Monday, noon-8 p.m., Tuesday, 10 a.m.- 8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. till 5 p.m. For questions and accessibility information, call 510-981-6107, TTY 510-548-1240, http://www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org.

OPERA IN THE LIBRARY

Berkeley Public Library presents a free noontime lecture/concert featuring West Edge Opera on Thursday, October 6, at 12:15pm. The opera’s Artistic Director Mark Streshinksy introduces the company’s upcoming production, Ariadne aux Naxos. One of Richard Strauss’ most fascinating and beautiful works explores the intersection of pop and classical, with a “show within a show”, as a tragic grand opera is forced to share the stage with a troupe of comedians. Cast members will sing selected arias.

The program takes place at the Central Berkeley Public Library, 5th Floor, 2090 Kittredge Street, which is wheelchair accessible.

This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. For more information, call 510-981-6241 or visit www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org.

Berkeley West Edge Opera’s production of Ariadne aux Naxos opens October 30th at the Performing Arts Theater at El Cerrito High School. Read more about the show at www.berkeleyopera.org.

Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance:
An Evening at the Central Library with Aurora Theatre Company
Artistic Director, Tom Ross and Education Director, Michael Mansfield

Join the Berkeley Public Library as we celebrate the launch of Berkeley’s acclaimed Aurora Theatre Company’s 20th anniversary season, which opens with renowned American playwright Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning A Delicate Balance.

At the Berkeley Public Library’s Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, Aurora Artistic Director Tom Ross and Aurora’s Education Director Michael Mansfield will speak about the Aurora production and lead a moderated discussion on Albee’s brutal comedy of manners, which won the Pulitzer after its 1966 Broadway premiere.  A Delicate Balance plays September 2 through October 9 at the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley.

A Delicate Balance is a sharp, witty examination on the limits of our responsibility to others, including family and friends, how hard it is to hold everything together, and how easily everything can all fall apart. Aurora Theatre Company Artistic Director Tom Ross helms a remarkable cast, including Aurora co-founder Ken Grantham, the company’s first leading lady Kimberly King, Jamie Jones, and Bay Area favorites Anne Darragh, Charles Dean, and Carrie Paff.

Aurora Theatre Company offers challenging, literate, intelligent stage works to the Bay Area, each year increasing its reputation for top-notch theater. Located in the heart of the Downtown Berkeley Arts District, Aurora Theatre Company has been called “one of the most important regional theaters in the area” and “a must-see midsize company” by the San Francisco Chronicle, while The Wall Street Journal has “nothing but praise for the Aurora.” The Contra Costa Times stated “perfection is probably an unattainable ideal in a medium as fluid as live performance, but the Aurora Theatre comes luminously close,” while the San Jose Mercury News affirmed “[Aurora Theatre Company] lives up to its reputation as a theater that feeds the mind.”

Berkeley’s Central Library is open Monday 12 noon until 8 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. till 5 p.m.  For more info please call 510-981-6195 or visit www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org.
