CENTRAL LIBRARY ART INSTALLATION
“Flights of Mind”
By Vita Wells

Artist talk & reception: Sunday February 24th , @2pm

BERKELEY, CA – Berkeley-based artist Vita Wells has created a large installation of some two hundred altered books spanning three levels of the atrium of the Berkeley Public Library’s Central Branch, 2090 Kittredge at Shattuck, downtown Berkeley. This exhibit will now be on display through March 31st, 2013.

Vita Wells will discuss the art installation and her work during a FREE artist talk and on Sunday afternoon, February 24th at 2:00pm in the Central Library’s 3rd floor Community Meeting Room.

Wells’ installation features many dozens of altered, sculpted books suspended and airborne, as if flying in a spectacular natural formation, throughout a large portion of the Central Library building.  “This installation,” the artist says, “is about possibility and community across space and time, and it celebrates how public libraries enrich who we are as individuals and as a community.”  Wells, who has created art objects since she was old enough to wield an x-acto knife, makes use of the medium of printed books as the raw material of her art, which is powerfully evident in Flights of Mind. In response to the frequent question, “Why books?” she says, “As physical objects, books are unlike any of the other material objects with which we surround ourselves in our day-to-day lives. They are singular in the power their mere physical presence possesses, the promise and possibility they embody.” Vita Wells lives and makes art in Berkeley. Flights of Mind was created for the Berkeley Public Library Foundation’s 11th annual Authors Dinner and will remain on display until March 31st. Information about the artist and her work can be found at http://www.vitawells.net/flightsBPL.html.

Access to the exhibit is available during the library’s open hours: Monday 12 – 8; Tuesday 10- 8; Wednesday – Saturday, 10 – 6; Sunday 1 – 5.

Wheelchair accessible. Sponsored by the Berkeley Public Library Foundation and the Berkeley Public Library. For more information, call (510) 981-6100 or connect www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org.

The Amazing Literary Adventures of Chabon & Waldman

Berkeley Public Library invites you to an exhibit on the literary careers of this year’s Berkeley Public Library Foundation’s Authors Dinner co-chairs, husband and wife authors, Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman. They are the authors of a dozen books each, ranging from fiction and mysteries to books on parenthood. Chabon won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in fiction for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. His latest novel is Telegraph Avenue, set in the East Bay. Like his wife, Chabon has written essays on parenthood, collected in his book, Manhood for Amateurs. Waldman has written seven books in her popular series, The Mommy-Track Mysteries. Her controversial essay “Motherlove” was published in 2005 and was argued about on The View. Oprah Winfrey invited Waldman onto her show to discuss the essay. The reception of the essay inspired Waldman to publish a collection of essays, Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace.

Berkeley’s Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street, historic lobby and old entrance display cases. The exhibit runs January 8 – February 10, 2013.

New Exhibit Covers the History of Berkeley’s Neighborhood Libraries

The Berkeley Public Library (BPL) has designed and installed a new historical exhibit, The Branches of Our Community: Berkeley’s Neighborhood Libraries, which is now on view in the Reading Room of the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street, in downtown Berkeley. The exhibit contains historic images from the four branch libraries that, since the 1890s, have formed the network of vibrant community centers that for generations have been well used and much loved by Berkeley’s citizens. Berkeleyans have long viewed their libraries as an essential part of their community’s continuum of learning, and the tradition of smaller libraries serving Berkeley’s local neighborhoods has ensured ceaseless library service for everyone for well over a century. The Berkeley Public Library has been there all along–from the horse-and-buggy era to today’s world of eBooks and free wireless networks–helping to nourish the hearts and minds of local citizens.

The Branch Library Improvement Program is the result of the voters’ approval of Measure FF, a $26 million bond funding the renovation and rebuilding of the four neighborhood libraries. As part of project planning, the City of Berkeley undertook a CEQA process. The resulting Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) played an important role in the decision-making associated with the South and West Branch Library projects, and a Zoning Ordinance Amendment under consideration at that time by Berkeley’s City Council. The final EIR was published in March 2011, and contains mitigation measures related to the documenting of library history. The Library is pleased to announce this work has been completed and is available for viewing by the public at the Central Library in downtown Berkeley. For the South and West Branches, distinct reports were commissioned, including drawings, floor plans, exterior and interior photographs, and a written history of the libraries and their place in BPL’s history.

The exhibit outlines how the current North Berkeley Branch Library was originally built in 1936, but due to budget shortfalls a planned rear wing was never built. This was remedied by the renovation and expansion that culminated in the branch’s reopening in April of this year. Similarly, the Claremont Branch Library, built originally in 1923 and expanded in the 1970s, was until this year in need of seismic strengthening and upgrades to full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The renovated Claremont Library reopened last May. West and South Berkeley were home to the first two branch libraries in the city of Berkeley, with small facilities originally established in 1896. Later buildings housing the West and South Berkeley Branches are now being completely rebuilt as new and larger libraries slated to open in 2013. The new exhibit now on display at the Central Library commemorates the history of these four neighborhood libraries and the roles they have played within their respective communities.

The Central Library is open Monday Noon – 8pm, Tuesday 10 am – 8pm, Wednesday through Saturday 10am – 6pm, and on Sunday 1pm – 5 pm. For questions and accessibility information, call (510) 981-6195, TDD (510) 548-1240

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT & ARTIST WORKSHOP
Man vs. Nature:
quiet images from the frontline

Oakland photographer and life coach, Nancy Duranteau exhibits color prints from her series Man vs. Nature in Berkeley Public Library’s Central Catalog Lobby, 2090 Kittredge at Shattuck, downtown Berkeley, from November 6th through December 17th.

Duranteau explores the complex relationship of humans and their natural environment by focusing on the futile struggle to replace chaos with structure.  Her series of photographs depict functional objects created by man facing inevitable destruction at the hands of nature.  Exploring this process through photography provides an opportunity to embrace that which is natural within us and in the world around us, yet improperly labeled disorderly and undesirable by society.   Access to the exhibit is available during the library’s open hours: Monday 12 – 8; Tuesday 10- 8; Wednesday – Saturday, 10 – 6; Sunday 1 – 5.

In conjunction with this exhibition Nancy Duranteau will present a FREE workshop “Building your Dream Life out of Chaos” on Saturday afternoon, December 17th at 3:00 pm in the Community Meeting Room on the 3rd floor of the Central Library.  Duranteau will speak about her approach to life coaching and how you can use documentary photography to achieve your goals.  Please call the Art & Music Department at (510) 981-6241 to register for this workshop.

Duranteau explores documentary photography through the lens of life coaching.  Her unique approach to life coaching integrates photography as a medium to facilitate self-awareness and explore emotions.  Duranteau’s educational background includes undergraduate work at Boston University where she received a B.A. degree in Economics and graduate work in Organizational Psychology at Columbia University in New  York.  She’s completed formal coaching programs including certification from JFK  University and Personnel Decisions, International.  An exceptional coach with a wealth of experience, she’s been featured in Fitness Magazine for her work.
