Berkeley Comic Arts Festival
at the Berkeley Public Library

 

The Berkeley Comic Arts Festival is a series of events held at the Berkeley Public Library to celebrate comic books and graphic novels, and their creators.  The aim of these events is to explore the breadth of stories told through the comics form, and to promote comics and graphic novels as diverse, high-quality reading material for readers of all ages.  The events that the library will be hosting will include author visits, workshops, and educational events   All of these events are free and open to all-ages, and will be held at the Central Library unless otherwise noted.  More events to be announced.

 

Free Comic Book Day Celebration with Hope Larson
May 4th, 1:00 to 4:00
Celebrate Free Comic Book Day at the Berkeley Public Library with Eisner Award winner, Hope Larson.  Hope is an illustrator and cartoonist whose most recent work, a graphic novel adaption Madeline L’Engle’s beloved classic A Wrinkle in Time, is sure to delight readers age eight to adult.  Come join us as we sit down with the artist to discuss working in the comic industry, her favorite books, and what projects she has on the horizon.

 

Superfriends!  featuring Bay Area Cartoonists Derek Kirk Kim, Jason Shiga, Lark Pien, and Thien Pham
May 18th, 2:00 to 3:30
After forging a friendship through their love of comics at a small Oakland Art Night, these four cartoonists made the leap from hand-stapled zines to wide acclaim in the world of graphic novels.  Hear them reminisce about their shared roots, see some of their early creations, and learn what the future holds for these exciting local stars!  This event is a perfect opportunity for parents, children, and adults to make some interactive comics!

 

Inside the Cartoon Art Museum
May 21st, 6:00 to 7:30
The Cartoon Art Museum is a hidden gem in the San Francisco museum scene, and is the only museum in the Western United States dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of all forms of cartoon art!  Get an introduction to the museum from curator Andrew Farago, who will share some of the museum’s treasures and talk about their upcoming exhibitions!

 

The History of Manga with Shaenon Garrity
May 30th, 4:00 to 5:00
Come learn the secret history of manga, the style of Japanese comics that have swept America!  Shaenon Garrity — creator of the webcomic Narbonic and an editor for the venerable manga publisher Viz — takes us back to the early days of manga and traces its evolution parallel to that of comics in America.

 

Reading with Pictures: Comics and Literacy
June 4th, 6:00 to 7:30
Central Library, Third Floor Meeting Room
What happens in a child’s mind when they read a comic?  Does reading comics prepare children for other forms of literacy?  How is the comics medium similar to the increasingly visual information landscape of the Internet?  Josh Elder, Executive Director of the education nonprofit Reading With Pictures, offers parents insight into how comics can make their kids better readers and how to make comics a part of a healthy reading diet!

At the Claremont Branch, 2940 Benvenue at Ashby
Kids of all ages love Babymouse, the adorable and irrepressible star of the hit comics series.  Writer Jenni Holm will visit the Claremont Branch to talk about what it’s like to make comics with her brother, the wild success of Babymouse, what’s coming next for her beloved characters, and cupcakes!  She’ll also be talking to parents about the importance of reading and the role that comics can play in children’s literacy development.  This will be a fun event for the whole family.  Books will be available for purchase, courtesy of Mrs. Dalloway’s.

 

Darick Robertson
June 20th, 6:30 to 8:00
At the South Branch, 1901 Russell St at MLK Ave
Best known for his gritty art on satirical masterpieces Transmetropolitan and The Boys, as well as celebrated runs on Wolverine and Nightcrawler, the ever-entertaining artist Darick Robertson joins us at the South Branch for a look at the darker corners of the comic book world.  Knowing Robertson’s work, the conversation may get salty, so parental guidance is suggested!

 

Matt Kindt
August 10th, 3:00 to 4:00
Mind control, superspies, government conspiracies, psychic powers… welcome to the world of Matt Kindt!  With his pulpy style and the twisty puzzles in his work, Kindt is making waves with creator-owned books like MIND MGMT and Superspy, and on hit titles like Frankenstein: Agent of SHADE and Wolverine and the X-Men!  Get a firsthand tour through some of comics most unique and intriguing worlds at this can’t miss author event!

 

Zine Workshop with Ed Luce!

Come get a three-week crash course in making, marketing, and selling your own comics from underground comics star Ed Luce, creator of Wuvable Oaf!

Free Drop-in Job Counseling
Fourth Wednesdays in Berkeley Public Library’s Electronic Classroom

 

Looking for a job? Or perhaps have a job and are not too sure that it is a job you want to stay with? Come for free job counseling provided by North Cities One Stop’s counselors. This free drop-in program takes place at the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge (at Shattuck), March 27, from 2 – 3:30 p.m., in the third floor Electronic Classroom.

The Drop-in Career Counseling offers free assistance with job search strategies, social networking tips, creating or improving a resume, interviewing, or salary negotiation. The career counseling program takes place every 4th Wednesday of the month, from 2 – 3:30 p.m., in the Berkeley Public Library’s third floor Electronic Classroom.

The Berkeley Barb and Gender Revolution:
lecture at the Berkeley Public Library

 

Join Berkeley historian Diana Stephens for an examination of the Gender Revolution through the lens of the celebrated and infamous newspaper, The Berkeley Barb. This free talk will take place at the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge (at Shattuck), on Saturday, March 16, from 2 – 4 p.m. in the third floor Community Meeting Room.

Ms. Stephens will explore how the Sexual Revolution became an impetus for the radical women’s movement in 1960s Berkeley, as seen through depictions and images of women in the Berkeley Barb. Nationally renowned, the Berkeley Barb was one of the forerunners of underground newspapers, representing radical Berkeley for twenty-five years (1965-1980).

  1. Grantseeking Basics for Individuals in the Arts

Sunday Streets bring Library Treats:
Music, Art and Theater at the Central Library

 

On Sunday, October 14, Shattuck Ave. will be closed to street traffic from Haste to Rose for Sunday Streets Berkeley. This festival celebrates local businesses and organizations, with performances and activities for all ages. Join the party for free hula hoop, Zumba, Pilates and yoga classes, face painting, a reading room from Moe’s Books and concerts of all sorts, from Quake City Jug Band to Cradle Duende’s “klezmenco”.

Berkeley Public Library proudly presents our local youth in concert, along with theater and interactive activities for children.

North Cities One Stop Job Club comes to the Berkeley Public Library

 

Networking is a huge part of a successful job search, but it requires skills that most of us need to work hard to develop, like the ability to succinctly pitch your qualifications to relative strangers at a moment’s notice.  Get feedback on your efforts and support from others who are also seeking work in a Networking Club at the Central Library on Wednesday, October 31st, 2012 from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.  The North Cities One Stop’s  Job Club has its off- site meetings every other month in the third floor Community Meeting Room of Berkeley’s Central Library at 2090 Kittredge Street (at Shattuck Avenue). Those who attend will have an opportunity to practice their elevator speeches, learn networking techniques from professionals and connect with other job seekers. Bring business cards, any job leads that you would like to share with others and be ready to practice the fine art of self-promotion.

A Special Evening With Author Michael Lewis
in Conversation with Linda Schacht Gage


The Berkeley Public Library, in conjunction with the Berkeley Public Library Foundation and the Harry Weininger Family, invite you to join us for a special evening on October 17, 2012, with a reception from 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm and the featured event from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Author Michael Lewis will discuss his recent article in Vanity Fair Magazine’s October 2012 issue about his six months embedded with President Obama titled, “Obama’s Way”. Mr. Lewis will be featured in conversation with Linda Schacht Gage.

This free event will be held at the Central Branch of the Berkeley Public Library at: 2090 Kittredge Street in Berkeley.  Due to the space limitations, tickets will be required for entry and will be limited to two tickets per person. The free-of-charge tickets can be obtained via:

“Michael Lewis has been a staunch supporter of our local libraries for years,” said Linda Schacht Gage, Capital Campaign Chairmen for the Neighborhood Libraries Campaign. “After reading the Vanity Fair piece, I had so many questions I wanted to ask Michael. Now I get to do it and you get to be there! We are so grateful to Michael for agreeing to help the library once again.”

Michael Lewis is an American non-fiction author and financial journalist. His bestselling books include The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, Liar’s Poker, The New New Thing, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, Panic, Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood and Boomerang. Lewis has worked for The New York Times Magazine, as a columnist for Bloomberg, as a frequent contributor to The New Republic, and a visiting fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He has been a contributing editor to Vanity Fair since 2009.

Linda Schacht Gage is an Emmy award winning television reporter with more than 20 years’ experience in local television. Her career began at KQED-TV on the highly regarded Newsroom nightly news show. She covered politics, locally and nationally, for KPIX, the CBS owned and operated station in San Francisco, for nineteen years. Linda has won two Emmy awards and an American Bar Association national award for her political coverage. She has been on the faculty of UC Berkeley since 1992 and has served on the Boards of the Berkeley Public Library Foundation, the UC Library Advisory Board, the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, The Daily Californian, and the UC Board of Trustees.

This event is underwritten by the Berkeley Public Library Foundation, through the generosity of the Harry Weininger Family. The Harry Weininger Family celebrates the life and generosity of Harry Weininger, who was a well-known figure in the Berkeley community and a long time supporter of the Berkeley Public Library. Harry was involved in a number of community organizations and played a peace-making role in the city’s political scene. He served for many years on the board of directors of the Berkeley Democratic Club and was the club’s president in 1983 and 1986. Mr. Weininger was always interested in the law and received a law degree from the University of San Francisco in 1988 when he was 54, then volunteered his legal services through the Berkeley Public Library’s Lawyer in the Library program. This event represents the First Annual Author Event to be sponsored as a memorial by the Weininger Family.
