Pitch yourself like a Pro would!
North Cities One Stop Job Club comes to the Berkeley Public Library

Networking is a huge part of a successful job search, but it requires skills that most of us need to work hard to develop, like the ability to succinctly pitch your qualifications to relative strangers at a moment’s notice.  Get feedback on your efforts and support from others looking for work in a new Networking Club that will meet at the Central Library on June 27th, 2012 from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.  The North Cities One Stop’s  Job Club will have off- site meetings every other month in the third floor Community Meeting Room of Berkeley’s Central Library at 2090 Kittredge Street (at Shattuck Avenue). Folks who attend will have an opportunity to practice their elevator speeches, learn networking techniques from professionals and connect with other job seekers. Bring business cards, any job leads that you would like to share with others and be ready to practice the fine art of self-promotion.

This is a Workforce Reinvestment Act funded program that is hosted each month in various locations across Berkeley by North Cities One Stop Development Center.  For more information on this program and to RSVP (required) contact Wendy Guzman, Employment Specialist, at 510-809-1330.

Book Into Film: The Last Station
Discussion Group at the Berkeley Public Library

Berkeley Public Library invites you to participate in an examination of The Last Station, a critically acclaimed film based on Jay Parini’s novel of the same name. The book and film are about the final years of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, in which he renounces his title, property, and family in favor of poverty and celibacy. Countess Sofya, his wife of nearly fifty years, discovers his plans to leave the rights to his iconic novels to the Russian people rather than his own family, and decides to use every trick of seduction in her considerable arsenal, to fight for what she believes is rightfully hers. Discussion group participants will read the book at home and then gather at 1:30 on Saturday, November 5, 2011 in the 3rd floor Community Meeting Room at Berkeley’s Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street to view the film together. OPERA IN THE LIBRARY

Berkeley Public Library presents a free noontime lecture/concert featuring West Edge Opera on Thursday, October 6, at 12:15pm. The opera’s Artistic Director Mark Streshinksy introduces the company’s upcoming production, Ariadne aux Naxos. One of Richard Strauss’ most fascinating and beautiful works explores the intersection of pop and classical, with a “show within a show”, as a tragic grand opera is forced to share the stage with a troupe of comedians. Cast members will sing selected arias.

The program takes place at the Central Berkeley Public Library, 5th Floor, 2090 Kittredge Street, which is wheelchair accessible.

This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. For more information, call 510-981-6241 or visit www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org.

Berkeley West Edge Opera’s production of Ariadne aux Naxos opens October 30th at the Performing Arts Theater at El Cerrito High School. Read more about the show at www.berkeleyopera.org.

Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance:
An Evening at the Central Library with Aurora Theatre Company
Artistic Director, Tom Ross and Education Director, Michael Mansfield

Join the Berkeley Public Library as we celebrate the launch of Berkeley’s acclaimed Aurora Theatre Company’s 20th anniversary season, which opens with renowned American playwright Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning A Delicate Balance.

At the Berkeley Public Library’s Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, Aurora Artistic Director Tom Ross and Aurora’s Education Director Michael Mansfield will speak about the Aurora production and lead a moderated discussion on Albee’s brutal comedy of manners, which won the Pulitzer after its 1966 Broadway premiere.  A Delicate Balance plays September 2 through October 9 at the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley.

A Delicate Balance is a sharp, witty examination on the limits of our responsibility to others, including family and friends, how hard it is to hold everything together, and how easily everything can all fall apart. Aurora Theatre Company Artistic Director Tom Ross helms a remarkable cast, including Aurora co-founder Ken Grantham, the company’s first leading lady Kimberly King, Jamie Jones, and Bay Area favorites Anne Darragh, Charles Dean, and Carrie Paff.

Aurora Theatre Company offers challenging, literate, intelligent stage works to the Bay Area, each year increasing its reputation for top-notch theater. Located in the heart of the Downtown Berkeley Arts District, Aurora Theatre Company has been called “one of the most important regional theaters in the area” and “a must-see midsize company” by the San Francisco Chronicle, while The Wall Street Journal has “nothing but praise for the Aurora.” The Contra Costa Times stated “perfection is probably an unattainable ideal in a medium as fluid as live performance, but the Aurora Theatre comes luminously close,” while the San Jose Mercury News affirmed “[Aurora Theatre Company] lives up to its reputation as a theater that feeds the mind.”

Berkeley’s Central Library is open Monday 12 noon until 8 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. till 5 p.m.  For more info please call 510-981-6195 or visit www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org.
