Zográphos: Drawing from Life
Street Photography of Greece by Ilona Sturm at Berkeley Public Library

Berkeley
, August 8, 2014 – Berkeley painter and photographer Ilona Sturm exhibits her most recent series of photographs - Zográphos: Drawing from Life: Street Photography of Greece at the Central Library from August 11– September 28, 2014. All are invited to meet Sturm and discuss her work during an Artist Reception on Sunday, September 7, at 2:00 pm in the First floor Catalog Lobby of the Central Library.

Drawing from Life is the literal translation of the Greek word for painter – zográphos or ζωγράφος in the Greek. Sturm draws upon the energy and dynamics of culture tied to a specific place to make her images. Her eye is keen to observe what transpires in the everyday life of a place – which in this case includes the Greek cities of Athens, Thessaloniki and Chanya. What catches her attention most are the Greek people – how they relate to communal spaces and how they gather and communicate within them.
