Author Phil Coffin visits the Library to discuss his new book, The Way Back, about the Berkeley Tuolumne Camp's resurrection after the Rim Fire, it's colorful past and the river that shaped it. Split into three parts, the book shares Phil's experiences as a longtime staffperson at the Camp. In Part I Phil rides his bike from Camp all the way back to Oakland, exploring the natural and built environment of the Tuolumne River watershed. Part II is a collection of reflections on his experience as camp staff in the 1990s, when diversity and creativity inspired a renaissance at Camp. Part III chronicles the calamitous spread of the Rim Fire, the tragic loss of the historic camp and the remarkable rebirth of a new Camp Tuolumne, now poised to welcome back Berkeley families for another 100 years. Phil will be offering copies of the book for sale at the event.
This event will take place in the Mystery Room on the second floor of the Central Library. Space is limited to 25 attendees.
Masks are required in the Library at all times.
