        <![CDATA[<p>Final presentation materials for the public art projects of the Berkeley Public Library's North and Claremont Branch Construction Projects will be on public view inside the North and Claremont Branch Libraries during normal branch library hours from Monday, December 20, 2010, through Tuesday, January 4, 2011 (please note that all library locations will be closed Friday, December 24, 2010, and Saturday, December 25, 2010, for Christmas holiday and Friday, December 31, 2010, and Saturday, January 1, 2011 for New Year's holiday).  These presentation materials will include material samples that accurately represent the finished work that each artist is proposing; a color sample board; a scale model / maquette or rendered drawing with appropriate details; a detailed project budget; and, written statements or comments that will help to clarify the artist's proposal. </p>

<p>This is the opportunity for the public to comment on the individual proposals during the period that they are displayed. These comments will be collated and delivered to the Selection Panel.  These informal comments may help to raise new perspectives and open issues for discussion by the Panel, and they may help the decision process in some way.<br />

<p>BERKELEY PUBLIC TAKING PART IN<br />
"SNAPSHOT: ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF CALIFORNIA LIBRARIES"<br />
The Berkeley Public Library is joining libraries across the state in participating in "Snapshot: One Day in the Life of California Libraries" on October 5, 2010, to show how important academic, public, school, and special libraries and library systems are to the state of California. This Snapshot Day has been developed by the California Library Association (CLA), <a href="http://cla-net.org/snapshotday/">http://cla-net.org/snapshotday/</a>.</p>

<p>Berkeley Public Library & 21st Century Literacy<br />
During the past year over 1.1 million visits were logged at <a href="http://berkeleypubliclibrary.org">berkeleypubliclibrary.org</a> -- an average of over 3000 people every day of the year. Over 210,500 of these web visitors to the Library made use of the abundant resources accessible among the many subscription databases and e-books the Library provides free to cardholders, such as full-text journal articles, online career research, online test practice, computing & legal e-textbooks, and much more.</p>

<p>Book Into Film: Brokeback Mountain<br />
Discussion Group at Berkeley Public Library<br />
Berkeley Public Library invites you to participate in an examination of Brokeback Mountain, an Oscar-award winning film based on Annie Proulx's short story of the same name.  Discussion group participants will read the short story and screenplay by Larry McMurtry at home and then gather at 1:30pm on Sunday, October 17, 2010 in the 3rd floor Community Meeting Room at Berkeley's Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street to view the film together. After viewing the film, participants will discuss the book, the movie and the adaptation process. </p>

<p>Berkeley Staff Art & Craft Show 2010<br />
Employees of the BPL again show off their artistic and creativity in the Fifth Annual Berkeley Public Library Staff Art Show.  The show runs from September 28 through October 25, 2010 at Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street in downtown Berkeley.  </p>

<p>OPERA IN THE CENTRAL LIBRARY<br />
Berkeley Public Library presents a free noontime concert featuring Berkeley West Edge Opera (formerly Berkeley Opera) on Thursday, October 21 at 12:15pm. Artistic Director Mark Streshinsky and cast members will preview highlights from the company's upcoming production of Xerxes by George Frideric Handel. The concert takes place at the Central Berkeley Public Library, 5th Floor, 2090 Kittredge Street, which is wheelchair accessible. This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  </p>

<p>Berkeley Public Library's 4th annual Banned Bookmobile is on display September 26 through October 31st in the entrance lobby of the Central Library.</p>

3rd floor Community Meeting Room and was followed by book sales and a book signing.<br />

Sponsored by the Friends of the Berkeley Public Library, it was held Saturday, May 22nd, 2pm, at the Central Library and was videotaped by Berkeley Community Media! <p>Find your ancestors!  Learn a language!  <br />
The Berkeley Public Library now features two new databases through the online catalog.<br />
Ancestry is an online site packed with genealogical reference material, available to use inside the Central Library and the Branches.  <br />
Mango Languages is a language learning system that teaches actual conversation skills for Chinese (Mandarin), French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish & English for Spanish speakers. You may choose a basic course to prepare for a short trip overseas or a more complete course to move beyond basic language skills. Available for use at home or other remote locations, as well as in the library.  Find these, and many more resources, at the "Search Online Resources" link on the Library's homepage, <a href="http://berkeleypubliclibrary.org">berkeleypubliclibrary.org</a>. Look under subject Genealogy for the Ancestry link and under Language Learning for Mango.</p>
