Why do you need to watch out? Quickly stated, the reason is that old news may not fit a new day. Adding your current or most recent job before earlier employments may give you the sense that you have completed the updating task. Stopping at this point, though, may undermine your chances to be a good fit to the job you now seek. A better approach is to back up and first research the key words used in job postings as well as identify industry changes, and observe job trends. Then adjust your descriptions and bullet points in your earlier employments also.

Are you ready to make the leap? Let’s examine ways to overcome challenges of career re-entry and transitioning. As a candidate in transition, you need to approach the job search differently. Your task is to become a contender in an environment thick with competing candidates, some of whom have the advantage of direct experience in the industry and in the job you are targeting. We will discuss novel techniques and approaches and show examples of resumes that pass through barriers.

We will focus on questions around resumes—PLUS best practices in updating your LinkedIn profile. You can substantially improve your profile by replacing LinkedIn’s default settings. You will learn to personalize your L-I website address, select an image (banner) at the top, and swap out your headshot  to meet today’s best practices. Then we will show ways to set up the headline that fits below your headshot. Hint: many people use their job title, but additional possibilities may match important key words more closely.

Our first step is to clear the way to bring energy and engagement to your resume by identifying low priority content in your Experience section. Items to be dismissed or rewritten might be duties, processes, and outdated details of job descriptions. Employer job postings are the authoritative sources of key words and desired outcomes that should be featured, such as achievements, challenges met, changes implemented, and differences made.
