Gene Luen Yang joins us again this year to discuss his latest work and the reclamation (and representation) of the original Shang-Chi character in the Marvel universe. His work is a perennial favorite of Berkeley’s high school students and community teens who have read his graphic novel, American Born Chinese. Attendees of this event will be able to connect this presentation to themes of identity, belonging, racism, xenophobia, and the Chinese immigrant experience.
To promote this event, the Library will be giving a limited number of Shang-Chi: Marvel Universe (Volume 2) away starting a few weeks before the event.
Registration is required. Register for the event on Zoom.
This event is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Berkeley Public Library and the Berkeley Unified School District.
