American artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) is known as the society portrait painter of the Gilded Age. A lifelong expatriate, Sargent made seven visits to Spain from 1879 to 1912, resulting in a remarkable body of work. This exhibition is the first to explore the influence of Spain on Sargent's work, and the Legion of Honor will be its exclusive West coast stop.

Come craft with us! Cross stitch is an easy, relaxing, creative craft. Whether you are already familiar with cross stitch or have never picked up a needle before, you are welcome to come learn and practice with us. Materials and instructions provided. Teens (6th-12th grade students) and adults welcome for this session.
If you don't have time to drop in to this craft-along session, don't worry! Cross Stitch kits will be available for pick up at all Berkeley Public Library locations during the month of February, while supplies last.

Utilizing a rich audiovisual presentation, Mark Montgomery French reveals the sonic secrets behind African-Americans’ cultural invisibility within the musical categories they helped define.
