Berkeley, March 30, 2015–The Berkeley Public Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating National Library Week (April 12 through 18, 2015), to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians and library workers. “The theme for National Library Week is ‘Unlimited Possibilities @ your library’,” said Jeff Scott, Director of the Berkeley Public Library. “We serve Berkeley by providing wireless, computer access, technology classes, story times, adult literacy classes, concerts, author talks, books, magazines, videos, music and more—all free!”

Berkeley, March 26, 2015—Join the Textile Mavens, Catherine Durand and Fern Royce, and learn the principles of quilting as you create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind quilted bookmark . This workshop is at the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge (at Shattuck) in the fourth floor Story Room on Monday, April 20 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Space is limited: call 510-981-6236 to register for a spot in one of the four half-hour sessions, ending with a 6:30pm session. All supplies are provided free of cost, and participants are invited to submit their work for inclusion in the library’s upcoming 34th Annual Quilt Show. This workshop is open to ages 6 and up.

Berkeley, CA March 24, 2015—The Berkeley Public Library invites you to attend a Special Workshop of the Board of the Library Trustees to hear updates on the Central Library’s Teen Room Project on Wednesday, April 22 at 5:30pm at the South Branch Library, 1901 Russell Street. The design team of Noll & Tam will present an update on schematic design and layouts affecting the first two floors of the Central Library. All community members are invited to attend this special workshop. The Board of Library Trustees’ regular meeting starts at 6:30pm.

Berkeley CA March 24, 2015—Berkeley Public Library’s branch libraries are winning accolades again; this time from the Berkeley Design Advocates. Both the West Branch and South Branch libraries were honored for outstanding design, along with ten other building projects, in the 11th biennial BDA Design Awards ceremony. The ceremony was held Wednesday, March 18 at the Aurora Theater in Berkeley. This year BDAs honored twelve projects completed between January 2013 and December 2014. BDA is a membership organization of architects, landscape architects, planners, builders and design professionals established in 1973 to promote excellence in the built environment of Berkeley.

Berkeley, March 23, 2015— Enjoy an evening performance with Berkeley’s own Jewish Music and Poetry Project on Wednesday, April 29 at 6:00pm at the Claremont Branch Library located at 2940 Benvenue at Ashby Avenue in Berkeley. The concert includes the world premiere of Berkeley composer William Ludtke’s Op. 155, Three Songs for soprano and cello with poems by Berkeley poet Marcia Falk and the U.S. premiere of Hungarian Lajos Delej’s Scherzo, recently rediscovered in the BBC archives. Berkeley, February 26, 2015—Beginning March 2, advanced reservations can be made to use the Berkeley Public Library’s Claremont Branch flexible programming space. The space is available Tuesday evenings from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm. The first available date to reserve the space is Tuesday, March 17. Reservations are free to Berkeley-based community groups, organizations and government agencies. The flexible programming space is located at the rear of the Children’s area and has space for three tables and chairs for up to 25 attendees.

Berkeley, February 27—Celebrate the Persian New Year, Nowruz, with the Berkeley Public Library and the Golden Thread Fairytale Players with 21 Days that Change the Year, a free performance for the entire family. The Golden Thread Fairytale Players, the first American theatre company focused on the Middle East, perform Saturday, March 14 at 11:00am in the third floor Community Meeting Room, Central Library at 2090 Kittredge. Fusing history and literature with contemporary arts, 21 Days That Change the Year offers a multi-cultural event providing children and their families with the richness of Middle Eastern arts and culture. Berkeley, February 17, 2015 — In its first year of operation Berkeley Public Library’s West Branch produced more energy than it used– leading to official certification as the first “net zero” library in the state and only the third municipal building of its kind in the nation. The International Living Future Institute (ILFI) is in the final stages of certification for West Branch and plans to present the West Berkeley Zero Net project during their National Conference this April in Seattle.
