Berkeley Public Library welcomes author Ryan North to discuss his book
How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler
Berkeley, January 15, 2019: Berkeley Public Library is excited to invite the community to a special event at the Northbrae Community Church on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 7:00pm. Come hear author Ryan North discuss his book How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler. The Northbrae Community Church is located at 941 The Alameda in Berkeley.
Pretend you’re a time traveler, and your time machine has broken down and stranded you somewhere in the distant past. You reach under the seat looking for the repair manual, but instead of offering you help in fixing your machine, the book cheerfully lets you know that you’ll never make it back to your own time. So, it suggests, why not get started remaking human civilization from the ground up?
This is the premise of author Ryan North’s How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler, a free-wheeling and funny review of human progress. Through its guise as the ultimate how-to manual, the book tells the entire history of fundamental technologies, revealing the connections between technological advancements and the underlying structure of knowledge itself. It is also wildly funny, improbably entertaining, and a perfect read for burgeoning scientists in middle school, high school, and beyond.
As the writer of the beloved Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Adventure Time comics, as well as the Shakespearean “chooseable-path adventure” books Romeo and/or Juliet and To Be Or Not To Be, North has won praise for creatively playing with narrative form and injecting accessible science into his stories. Join us for a smart, surprising, and silly evening for teens and adults.
This free event is made possible by a generous gift from the Pace Trust, in support of the Berkeley Public Library North Branch.
